Laser Focus On Your Target Audience With Ppc Advertising | THMG ...

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Advertising in online media has some definite advantages over offline media in terms of cost, reach, interactivity, targeting the right markets and measuring responses. This is why internet advertising is now becoming hot property for marketers!

Of all advertising (telemarketing, magazine advertising, newspapers, radio, TV, banner ads, email marketing, etc.), PPC advertising provides the most qualified leads and is proven to have the highest sales conversion rate. This is because, unlike other forms of advertising, your ad is only displayed when your prospective customer is searching for your products or services. This is why nearly 40% of all online advertisements are now pay per click campaigns.

The trend of advertisements within the online medium is fast changing too. While search engine optimisation is becoming vital for making your website emerge above competition, pay per click advertising is providing a very cost effective means to reach your target audience.

According to The Kelsey Group and ConStat, Inc, small-business PPC advertisers currently allocate on average 23% of their total advertising budget to PPC activities. Of these, 54% expect to increase their PPC spending the next year. Paid search has undoubtedly become the hottest means of online advertising.

What is a PPC Ad
Pay per click campaigns (PPC) are defined as the guaranteed placement of a small ?ad? on the search results page for a specific keyword or keywords. Your PPC ads are displayed when a user searches for your services/products. This means PPC ads are targeting those customers who

Erectile Dysfunction May Signal Hidden Heart Disease ? WebMD

WebMD News from HealthDay

TUESDAY, Jan. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Doctors should look more closely at the overall health of impotent men, a large new study suggests.

Men with even mild erectile dysfunction -- but no known heart problems -- face a major extra risk of developing cardiovascular conditions in the future. And as erectile dysfunction becomes more pronounced, signs of hidden heart disease and earlier death risk grow.

Not surprisingly, men already known to have a heart condition along with severe erectile dysfunction fare worst of all, the Australian researchers found.

Among men aged 45 and up without diagnosed heart disease, those with moderate or severe erectile dysfunction were up to 50 percent more likely to be hospitalized for heart problems, according to an adjusted analysis. Erectile dysfunction boosted the risk for hospitalization even more when men had a history of cardiovascular disease.

Erectile problems, which become more likely as men grow older, aren't a guarantee of heart problems. Still, men with erectile dysfunction should "take action by seeing a health professional and asking for a heart check," said study lead author Dr. Emily Banks. "Men with erectile dysfunction need to be assessed for their future risk of cardiovascular disease, and any identified risk must be managed appropriately."

Banks is a professor of epidemiology at the Australian National University's National Center for Epidemiology and Population Health.

Banks said an estimated 60 percent of men aged 70 and up suffer from moderate to severe erectile dysfunction. The condition can place major limits on sexual activity and require the use of drugs like Viagra that can come with side effects and awkward challenges when it comes to the timing of doses.

A variety of causes can contribute to impotence, but "it is widely acknowledged that erectile dysfunction is predominantly the result of underlying cardiovascular disease," Banks said.

Doctors already believe that erectile dysfunction is an early warning sign of heart problems, but it's not clear why. It's possible, Banks said, that the arteries of the penis are smaller than those of other parts of the body and may be more likely to reveal problems when their lining deteriorates.

The new study aims to gain more insight into how the severity of erectile dysfunction translates into a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. The researchers tracked more than 95,000 men aged 45 and up, and compared data collected between 2006 and 2009 to data collected in 2010.

The researchers adjusted their statistics so they wouldn't be thrown off by factors like high or low numbers of men who smoked or drank alcohol, or were wealthy or poor. They found that the men with severe erectile dysfunction, compared to those with no problem, were eight times more likely to have heart failure, 60 percent more likely to have heart disease and almost twice as likely to die of any cause.

PBS Off Book: The Art of Creative Coding, Graphic Design & Other ...

Comedy is a huge part of entertainment and culture, but for decades there have been very limited opportunities for comedians to reach audiences and succeed. Fortunately, the internet has blown that wide open, providing new venues for the creation of comedy, removing the limitations of the old guard, and opening new doors to laughter. Podcasts, Twitter, and sketch videos are brand-new mediums that have given birth to new kinds of humor, and allow comics to connect with audiences in a deeper, more meaningful way.

Patients' own skin cells are transformed into heart cells to create 'disease in a dish'

Patients' own skin cells are transformed into heart cells to create 'disease in a dish'

Monday, January 28, 2013

Most patients with an inherited heart condition known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) don't know they have a problem until they're in their early 20s. The lack of symptoms at younger ages makes it very difficult for researchers to study how ARVD/C evolves or to develop treatments. A new stem cell-based technology created by 2012 Nobel Prize winner Shinya Yamanaka, M.D., Ph.D., helps solve this problem. With this technology, researchers can generate heart muscle cells from a patient's own skin cells. However, these newly made heart cells are mostly immature. That raises questions about whether or not they can be used to mimic a disease that occurs in adulthood. In a paper published January 27 in Nature, researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and Johns Hopkins University unveil the first maturation-based "disease in a dish" model for ARVD/C. The model was created using Yamanaka's technology and a new method to mimic maturity by making the cells' metabolism more like that in adult hearts. For that reason, this model is likely more relevant to human ARVD/C than other models and therefore better suited for studying the disease and testing new treatments.

"It's tough to demonstrate that a disease-in-a-dish model is clinically relevant for an adult-onset disease. But we made a key finding here?we can recapitulate the defects in this disease only when we induce adult-like metabolism. This is an important breakthrough considering that ARVD/C symptoms usually don't arise until young adulthood. Yet the stem cells we're working with are embryonic in nature," said Huei-Sheng Vincent Chen, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor at Sanford-Burnham and senior author of the study.

To establish this model, Chen teamed up with expert ARVD/C cardiologists Daniel Judge, M.D., Joseph Marine, M.D., and Hugh Calkins, M.D., at Johns Hopkins University. Johns Hopkins is home to one of the largest ARVD/C patient registries in the world.

"There is currently no treatment to prevent progression of ARVD/C, a rare disorder that preferentially affects athletes. With this new model, we hope we are now on a path to develop better therapies for this life-threatening disease," said Judge, associate professor and medical director of the Center for Inherited Heart Disease at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Disease in a dish

To recreate a person's own unique ARVD/C in the lab, the team first obtained skin samples from ARVD/C patients with certain mutations believed to be involved in the disease. Next they performed Yamanaka's technique: adding a few molecules that dial back the developmental clock on these adult skin cells, producing embryonic-like induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The researchers then coaxed the iPSCs into producing an unlimited supply of patient-specific heart muscle cells. These heart cells were largely embryonic in nature, but carried along the original patient's genetic mutations.

However, for nearly a year, no matter what they tried, the team couldn't get their ARVD/C heart muscle cells to show any signs of the disease. Without actual signs of adult-onset ARVD/C, these young, patient-specific heart muscle cells were no use for studying the disease or testing new therapeutic drugs.

Speeding up time

Eventually, the team experienced the big "aha!" moment they'd been looking for. They discovered that metabolic maturity is the key to inducing signs of ARVD/C, an adult disease, in their embryonic-like cells. Human fetal heart muscle cells use glucose (sugar) as their primary source of energy. In contrast, adult heart muscle cells prefer using fat for energy production. So Chen's team applied several cocktails to trigger this shift to adult metabolism in their model.

After more trial and error, they discovered that metabolic malfunction is at the core of ARVD/C disease. Moreover, Chen's team tracked down the final piece of puzzle to make patient-specific heart muscle cells behave like sick ARVD/C hearts: the abnormal over-activation of a protein called PPAR?. Scientists previously attributed ARVD/C to a problem in weakened connections between heart muscle cells, which occur only in half of the ARVD/C patients. With the newly established model, they not only replicated this adult-onset disease in a dish, but also presented new potential drug targets for treating ARVD/C.

What's next?

Chen's team was recently awarded a new grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to create additional iPSC-based ARVD/C models. With more ARVD/C models, they will determine whether or not all (or at least most) patients develop the disease via the same metabolic defects discovered in this current study.

Together with the Johns Hopkins team, Chen also hopes to conduct preclinical studies to find a new therapy for this deadly heart condition.

What?s next for Anthony Pettis? Waiting patiently for the lightweight title shot

With his performance against Donald Cerrone on Saturday night, Anthony Pettis made a believer out of many fight fans. One of those who now thinks Pettis belongs in the title shot conversation is UFC president Dana White.

While the next bout for UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson is set with Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez in April, Pettis has set himself up as the obvious next man up.

"I think the Melendez fight is pretty set, but (Pettis is) next. I can't say enough things about the kid tonight. That was incredible," White said in the postfight press conference.

The last time Pettis had a title shot, he had a wrench thrown into the plans. Pettis won the WEC lightweight belt in the promotion's final fight. A title shot was promised to whoever had the belt when the WEC merged with the UFC.

But two weeks after Pettis won the belt, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard faced off for the belt. They fought to a draw and Edgar kept the belt, but Maynard was given an immediate rematch.

Instead of waiting for the title shot then, Pettis fought Clay Guida. He lost a decision, and the title shot was gone. This time, he's not going to let the title shot slip through his hands.

"If it's a guaranteed title shot, then I'm waiting. That was my goal this year, and I'm definitely going to wait and get better," Pettis said.

The way title shots have been going in the UFC, there's no way to know if Pettis is making the right call. However, what Pettis is doing is setting himself up as the go-to guy if the UFC needs him. Melendez has had to postpone fights because of injuries in the past, and you never know what could happen as fighters prepare for their bouts.

NFC blows out AFC 62-35 in Pro Bowl in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) ? A handful of shenanigans and plenty of points ? yet still another ho-hum Pro Bowl.

Whether the NFL's all-star game will return next season is a something the league will ponder the next few months after the NFC's 62-35 blowout of the AFC on Sunday.

"It's been an unbelievable week," Seattle rookie quarterback Russell Wilson said, "And the thing was, if you watched us, everybody was competing today and it was really awesome."

Wilson at least got the crowd pumped up in the second half with some nifty scrambles and three passing touchdowns. There was also Houston's sack-happy defensive end J.J. Watt going out for a couple of passes as a wide receiver, and retiring Green Bay center Jeff Saturday snapping to two Mannings on opposite teams.

But while the NFC appeared unstoppable on offense, with nearly each player putting up fantasy-worthy lines in limited play, the AFC had five turnovers and scored most of its points well after the game was no longer competitive.

Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph was voted the game's MVP with five catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.

"Guys were competing, guys wanted to win and guys want to keep the game here," Rudolph insisted. "That was the point before the game. We want to keep this game rolling for future Pro Bowlers."

Watt, who had 20 1/2 sacks for Houston, lined up as a wide receiver on the AFC's third play from scrimmage, but missed a pass from Denver quarterback Peyton Manning. He was targeted one more time, but didn't make a catch.

He later showed a television camera a bloody left pinkie, joking with NBC broadcasters that it was proof that the players were trying.

"Hey, Commish, we're playing hard," Watt said as he showed his finger.

Roger Goodell has said the Pro Bowl won't be played again if play didn't improve this year. Last year, fans in Hawaii booed as lineman were clearly not trying. On one play in that game, Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen did a barrel roll to switch positions with a teammate.

If players were coasting this time around, it was less obvious. The AFC just played poorly. And fans didn't boo much ? the stands were relatively empty even though the game sold enough tickets to lift a local television blackout.

The game was trending on Twitter in the United States early on, but quickly gave way to the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the WWE Royal Rumble.

Saturday, retiring at the end of this season, played for both teams, though he came representing the NFC. He lined up on one play for the AFC to snap the ball one last time to Manning, his longtime former Colts teammate.

Saturday said it meant a lot to him that the Broncos quarterback, whom Saturday called a true friend, orchestrated the stunt.

"He's got a little more pull than I got," Saturday said. "He got it all set up and timed up for me, so it was really nice of him to do that."

Saturday played 13 seasons in Indianapolis, all with Manning ? except 2011, when Manning was out with a neck injury. Saturday then played later in the game for the NFC, snapping to Peyton's brother, Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Saturday's last play on the field was a passing touchdown by Eli Manning.

Peyton Manning said it was nice for the NFL to allow the play to happen.

"It's something that I'll always remember," he said, "that he'll always remember to kind of get that one, final snap together after the thousands that we've taken together."

Even as the NFC piled up touchdowns, the game struggled for memorable moments after Saturday's momentary switch.

In the second quarter, referee Ed Hochuli drew cheers when announcing a pass interference penalty on Denver cornerback Champ Bailey in the second quarter ? the first flag of the game.

"Yes, there are penalties in the Pro Bowl," Hochuli said, drawing laughs and loud cheers.

Giants wideout Victor Cruz broke a Pro Bowl record with 10 catches. Tampa Bay receiver Vincent Jackson had 91 yards and two touchdowns. Eli Manning threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Cincinnati's A.J. Green had three TD catches for the AFC.

NFL officials said earlier in the week that the league wants to decide the future of the Pro Bowl by the time next season's schedule is released in April.

"We understood exactly what (Goodell) wanted, guys were making plays all over the field," Cruz said. "There was a little bit more high intensity than in years past and we were excited to play."

Wounded soldier gets double-arm transplant in Md.

BALTIMORE (AP) ? A soldier who lost all four limbs in a roadside bomb attack in 2009 in Iraq has received a double-arm transplant in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins Hospital officials said Monday.

Surgeons who treated the unidentified infantryman plan to discuss the transplant Tuesday at a news conference with the soldier. The soldier is one of seven in the U.S. who have undergone successful double-arm transplants, the hospital said.

The transplant last month is the first for the hospital and involved an innovative treatment to prevent rejection of the new limbs. The treatment used the dead donor's bone marrow cells and so far has prevented rejection and reduced the need for anti-rejection drugs. Those drugs can cause complications, including infection and organ damage, hospital officials said.

The novel treatment to help prevent rejection was pioneered by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at Johns Hopkins, when he previously worked at the University of Pittsburgh.

In his previous job, Lee led five single-hand transplant operations on five patients, giving them new hands plus marrow from their donors. In an interview last fall, Lee said that all five recipients had done well and that four were taking only one anti-rejection drug instead of combination treatments most transplant patients receive.

Minimizing anti-rejection drugs is important because they have side effects and raise the risk of cancer over the long term. Those risks have limited the willingness of surgeons and patients to do more hand, arm and even face transplants. Unlike a life-saving heart or liver transplant, limb transplants are aimed at improving quality of life, not extending it.

Quality of life is a key concern for people missing arms and hands ? prosthetics for those limbs are not as advanced as those for feet and legs.

Lee has received funding for his work from AFIRM, the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, a cooperative research network of top hospitals and universities around the country that the government formed about five years ago. With government money, he and several other plastic surgeons around the country are preparing to do more face transplants, possibly using the new minimal immune suppression approach.

Freezing temps give stores a January thaw

3 hrs.

Call it the Christmas gift that came late.

The freezing weather that has blanketed large swaths of the country for the past several days is?just?the catalyst retailers needed to spur demand for cold-weather gear ? except?that?it hit after many of them had already begun post-holiday markdowns.

?It was too late to turn back for retailers,? Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at the NPD Group, said via e-mail. He said the cold snap will help sales, but it came ?a little late.?

January and February are typically the slowest months for retailers. In 2013, this seasonal trough came on the heels of a holiday season during which consumer spending failed to live up to expectations, rising a lower-than-projected 3 percent.

Thanks to the plummeting temperatures, stores? cold-weather inventory won?t be languishing on racks come springtime. But the drawback is that they?ll make smaller profits on those discounted gloves, hats and boots.

?Most of the sales that are getting done are getting done on discounts,? said Christian Buss, apparel and softlines analyst at Credit Suisse. ?The business is going to get done, it?s just not going to be high-quality business.?

?You make up for some of it in volume,? said Joe Feldman, a senior analyst at Telsey Advisory Group.

Things could be worse, according to Barbara Wyckoff, equity research analyst in specialty retail and apparel for CLSA/Credit Agricole Securities (USA). With last year?s mild winter fresh in their minds, retailers hedged their bets when it came to ordering cold-weather items for this winter, so they have smaller stockpiles to mark down.

The unseasonably warm winter last year helped retailers another way, too. For many people, it?s been a while since they pulled their heaviest clothing out of the closet, increasing the likelihood that items have gone out of style, no longer fit or got lost.?Buss said unpredictable winter weather is driving stores to look for more ?transitional? merchandise; that is, items versatile enough to be worn throughout the winter.

?The good news for retailers is even though they lose on the margin, they probably already booked that markdown in the fourth quarter,? said Paul Swinand, an equity analyst at Morningstar. Plus, it should help boost traffic. ?Generally, weather does bring people into stores.?

Bill Martin, founder of ShopperTrak, a company that analyzes retail foot traffic, predicted that stores can look forward to an increase in traffic after the weather moderates. The people who aren?t rushing out to buy parkas will probably hunker down at home for now, but once cabin fever sets in, they?ll be headed out to the mall as soon as the cold spell breaks.

?January should get maybe a little boost,? Swinand predicted.

Family History: Our place in space - MyHeritage.com - English blog

16????Jan 20132 comments

How do our surroundings, our homes, impact our families, our thoughts, our history?

Isn't this what our pursuit of genealogy helps to reconstruct? To make sure that our family history remains alive and known and preserved?

In a poem by Leib Borisovich Talalai, a young poet whose family was from our ancestral village of Vorotinschtina, Belarus, and who was murdered in Minsk (1941), he writes about his family home in the village, "If the walls of this house could talk. ..." When I found two of his slim books of poetry at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, it was fascinating to read his words.

What an image he presented of a home?s talking walls! What if we could access those memories? What do you know about the spaces in which your ancestors lived? Today, many of us move frequently to different homes in the same city, or even to different countries. Sometimes it is a positive choice made for education, a better job; at other times, it has been a forced relocation.

One of Spain?s most famous writers, Antonio Munoz Molina (?Sepharad,? 2006), asks his readers what might be the minimal portion of country, of roots or hearth, that a human being requires? Do these moves contribute to maintaining or cutting ties to our past and to our memories? What about those generations of memories? Do we pass them on to the younger generations?

Does your family history include a move from an ancestral location? What stories were handed down by those who relocated? How have you preserved those memories?

Share your memories in the comments below.

Hillary Clinton Benghazi Testimony Scheduled For January 23

WASHINGTON ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will testify Jan. 23 before the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the deadly Sept. 11 assault on the US mission in Libya.

That's the word from Rep. Ed Royce, chairman of the panel. He said in a statement late Monday that Clinton will answer questions about the raid that killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi.

Clinton had been scheduled to testify last month but she suffered a concussion when she fell during an illness. She was later hospitalized with a blood clot in her head.

She has planned to step down and President Barack Obama has nominated Sen. John Kerry to replace her.

British Hero?s Victoria Cross May Sell For $279,000

July 11, 2012

?

On August 23, 1914, Private Sidney Godley of the Royal Fusilliers set the standard for heroism in WWI. Although severely injured, with a bullet lodged in his head, he took control of a machine gun and for two hours single-handedly held off six German divisions from the Nimy Bridge at Mons, France. When his battalion was ordered to withdraw, he provided covering fire until all were evacuated. For his actions, Godley won a variety of medals, including the Victoria Cross, which will be featured at a Spink auction in London on July 19th, when they?re expected to sell for $217,000-$279,000.

Update: the Godley medal sold for way above expectations, achieving a result of $433,653 including buyer?s premium.

Venture Capital Action Plan: Harper announces plan to strengthen ...

MONTREAL ? Saying Canada?s economic well-being depends on companies having the capital they need to create growth, Prime Minister Stephen Harper laid out the details Monday of a plan to bolster venture capital investment in the country.

The government?s Venture Capital Action Plan, which was announced in the last federal budget, is making $400-million available to help increase private-sector investments in the next seven to 10 years.

Canadian firms with good ideas and high growth potential have often been starved for needed funds

Ottawa is aiming to deploy $400-million to help increase private-sector investments in the next seven to 10 years.

?Canadian venture capital markets have been dealing with mixed results and growing challenges over the past decade, especially since the global credit crunch of 2008-2009,? Harper told a news conference in Montreal attended by a large contingent from the business community.

?This unfortunate situation has meant that Canadian firms with good ideas and high growth potential have often been starved for needed funds.?

The Venture Capital Action Plan will make available $250-million to establish new funds led by the private sector in partnership with institutional and corporate strategic investors as well as interested provinces.

Up to $100-million will be made available to recapitalize existing large private-sector funds while there will also be a $50-million investment in three to five existing high- performing Canadian venture capital funds.

The prime minister?s venture capital plan amounts to just peanuts and won?t get the job done

?Our government firmly believes strong action is required to bolster the available risk capital in Canada,? Harper said. ?It is vital for Canada?s economic future and indeed for the long-term prosperity of all Canadians.?

In Ottawa, NDP finance critic Peggy Nash slammed the plan as woefully insufficient.

?The prime minister?s venture capital plan amounts to just peanuts and won?t get the job done,? Nash said.

?Canada?s venture capital market has been underperforming for over a decade and this funding will likely have little meaningful impact. New Democrats are calling on the government to step up and take a lead on Canada?s economy rather than wait for others to do it.?

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, who attended the announcement along with Maxime Bernier, the minister of state for small business, said the country is relying on the creativity and ingenuity of young Canadians.

?The primary focus here is on young entrepreneurs and the fact that we?re losing young entrepreneurs and their businesses to American enterprises, larger enterprises,? he said of the plan.

Flaherty said the government is aware of thousands of young entrepreneurs across the country who need the kind of support proposed in not only the federal plan but also strategies devised by the provinces.

Harper made the announcement on the set of the French-language version of CBC-TV?s ?Dragon?s Den,? which focuses on entrepreneurs pitching their ideas for possible investment.

?It?s a very popular show,? Harper quipped. ?One that my own family watches quite often.?

Teens say: ?Apple is dead, long live Microsoft and Samsung.?

Teenagers are a finicky lot. As any parent can tell you, teens generally like the opposite of whatever their parents find ?cool.? Apple continues to win market share with iPhones, iPads, and Macs when it comes to Gen X and the Millennials, but what about their children?

Last week, Forbes reported that the younger crowd?s opinion of Apple is quickly dropping. Where the iPhone was once the most coveted device around, kids are now becoming far more interested in the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2. Even the mighty iPad is starting to fall to Microsoft?s Surface. According to market researchers, in 2011, Samsung?s smartphones weren?t coveted much at all. Today? 22% of teens want them, a big drop in Apple?s appeal.

While we weren?t surprised to hear about Samsung?s success, given their great sales numbers recently, we were shocked to hear that teens are in favor of the latest Microsoft Surface tablet. Although we really liked the tablet, sales haven?t exactly been rocking the world. That said, this is good news for Redmond and it will be interesting to see if they can leverage the popularity to sell more of the Surface RT and the Surface Pro when it?s released.

Time will tell whether Apple can change their image and become the ?cool? company again, or if their constant barrage of lawsuits and minimal innovations will convince customers to move elsewhere.

Blu-ray Review: To Rome with Love

The Movie Itself: Our Reviewer's Take

In his follow-up to the fantastic 'Midnight in Paris', Woody Allen heads southeast from the city of light and lands in the eternal city, Rome. Here, he presents four different stories, mixed together throughout the movie, but not connected to each other (lest one think he or she is in for another film where characters from one story thread cross paths with those in another). Two of the tales are told primarily with English-speaking actors, while the other two showcase Italian-speaking roles (with English subtites).

Allen himself stars alongside Judy Davis as the parents of a young American (played by Alison Pill) who has become engaged to a local Italian (Flavio Parenti). Allen's character is upset that his daughter hasn't found someone from a rich family to marry, but rather the son of a local mortician (Fabio Armiliato). But when he hears the mortician singing in the shower, he changes his mind and hatches a plan to turn the undertaker into a global singing sensation.

In one of the Italian-spoken stories, Antonio (Alessandro Tiberi) has recently married Milly (Alessandra Mastronardi) and is intending to introduce her to relatives at a hotel where the newlyweds are staying. Milly gets lost trying to find her way back to the hotel, while Antonio gets a visit from an escort (played by Pen?lope Cruz) right at the same time his relatives show up at the hotel. Naturally, Antonio's relatives think the escort is Milly, and Antonio has to play along, lest his family think he's been with a prostitute. We've seen plots similar to what happens here in many other movies, and this turns out to be the most predictable and, therefore, the least entertaining of the movie's four stories.

In the other Italian dialogue tale, Oscar winner Roberto Benigni plays a man who is as common as someone could get. He's got a wife, two kids, and gets up every morning at 7am to have the same breakfast and go off to the same mundane job. However, one day ? for no particular reason ? everyone starts paying attention to him. He's mobbed by photographers and press, and he's suddenly become the most popular man in Rome. There's not much of a smokescreen here from Woody Allen. Roberto's story is obviously a comment on the ridiculousness of fame and how insane (and fleeting) it can be.

Finally, the most interesting story in 'To Rome With Love' begins with Alec Baldwin playing John, a middle-aged man who has returned to Rome on vacation with his wife, but takes some time alone to visit an area of the city he lived in when he was a young man. While there, he crosses paths with Jack (Jesse Eisenberg), who reminds John very much of himself when he was younger. Jack is staying with his girlfriend, but finds himself being drawn to one of her best friends (played by Ellen Page) when she arrives in Rome for a visit. To divulge any more about the connection between John and Jack would ruin the surprise (which one doesn't catch onto until about 20 minutes into the story). I found this to be the best of the tales in Woody's flick, and one that was perhaps worthy of a whole movie by itself.

Much like his prior film, 'To Rome With Love' is Woody Allen's love letter to another European city. While it never quite matches the magic of 'Midnight in Paris', it's an enjoyable enough watch, although it's probably not going to be remembered as one of Allen's better efforts.

The Blu-Ray: Vital Disc Stats

'To Rome With Love' travels to Blu-ray in a standard case housing a single 25GB disc. The disc is front-loaded with the theatrical trailer for 'Midnight in Paris' before arriving at its menu selection scene, with selection running across the bottom of the screen while video clips from the film play on the upper half. The case contains one insert, which is a contest advertisement for a chance to win a trip to Rome.

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

Like many of director Woody Allen's recent films, 'To Rome With Love' has a very over-saturated and "warm" look to the picture. The result is outdoor visuals that have a real luster to them, but also actors who tend to appear that they've been out in the sunlight for far too long. However, this seems to be Allen's preference, and this Blu-ray does a fine job of replicating the theatrical look of the film. While some of the indoor scenes and a few close-ups give off a somewhat soft appearance, the majority of outdoor scenes are crisp, colorful, and really show off the beauty of Rome. Although the movie was shot in 35mm, film grain is barely noticeable at all in most of the movie's scenes.

The Audio: Rating the Sound

The film is given a lossless English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track (also available in French) with no flaws other than the fact that it's hardly active at all. As one could guess from a Woody Allen flick, most scenes aren't much more than people standing around talking to one another, so there's not much opportunity for "oomph" from the audio. Viewers/listeners will notice more activity, however, during a thunderstorm scene that takes place during the movie. An English Audio Descriptive Service is also available.

The Supplements: Digging Into the Good Stuff

  • Con Amore: A Passion For Rome (HD, 9 min.) ? This all-too-short featurette includes some comments from the cast about working with Woody Allen, and how he allows his actors to pretty much develop characters on their own, even if it means diverting from his script. Sadly (although probably no surprise to anyone who follows Allen's career), the director himself does not participate at all in this segment.
  • Theatrical Trailers (HD, 2 min. per trailer) ? The only other bonus on this disc are the original theatrical trailer for the movie, and the front-loaded trailer for 'Midnight in Paris', which can also be accessed from the main menu.

HD Bonus Content: Any Exclusive Goodies in There?

Final Thoughts

As Woody Allen films go, 'To Rome With Love' falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. It's far from his most moving or side-splitting work, but there's a pleasantry about it that draws you into the film and makes for an enjoyable viewing. Unless you're a die-hard Woody fan, this is a picture you will probably just want to rent rather than add to your permanent collection. It's worth a viewing? but once should be enough for most.

Falcons finally over the hump

Atlanta blows 20-point halftime lead but wins on late field goal

By PAUL NEWBERRY

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:19 p.m. ET Jan. 13, 2013

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Falcons called on a pair of Matty Ices to turn back the greatest fourth-quarter comeback in NFL playoff history.

After the top-seeded Falcons squandered a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter, Matt Ryan completed two long passes and Matt Bryant kicked a 49-yard field goal with 8 seconds to give Atlanta a stunning 30-28 victory over Russell Wilson and the gutty Seattle Seahawks in an NFC divisional playoff game Sunday.

The Falcons (14-3) overcame their reputation for choking in the playoffs, winning their first postseason game since 2004. They'll host San Francisco in the NFC championship game next Sunday with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

Wilson threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, doing all he could to make the Seahawks (12-6) the first playoff team ever to rally from such a daunting deficit in the final period. Marshawn Lynch appeared to have locked it up for Seattle when he scored on a 2-yard run with 31 seconds left for a 28-27 lead.

But the Seahawks' defense, which is one of the NFL's best and had totally stymied the Falcons in the fourth, went to a softer coverage and got burned. The Falcons had just enough time to pull off a comeback of their own.

Ryan, shaking off the struggles in his first three playoff appearances, hooked up with Harry Douglas on a 29-yard pass in front of the Falcons bench, and coach Mike Smith quickly signaled a timeout. Then, Ryan went down the middle to his favorite target, tight end Tony Gonzalez, a Hall of Famer-to-be playing what could've been his final game.

Gonzalez hauled in the 19-yard throw, and Smith called his final timeout with 13 seconds remaining. Instead of risking another play and having the clock run out, he sent Bryant in for the field goal try.

The Seahawks called time just before the ball was snapped, and Bryant's kick sailed right of the upright. That turned out to be nothing more than practice. The next one was right down the middle, giving the Falcons a stunning victory. Bryant took off toward the Falcons logo in the middle of the field, pumping his right fist before he was mobbed by his teammates.

"Wow," Smith said.

Wilson finished with 385 yards passing and did all he could to lead the Seahawks back from a 27-7 deficit entering the final quarter. When Lynch powered over, the ball breaking the goal line just before it squirted from his arms, Seattle celebrated like it had won its second straight playoff game on the road, having already taken care of Robert Griffiin III and the Washington Redskins.

Not so fast.

Ryan and Bryant led the Falcons back.

"Our quarterback is a special player," Smith said. "They call him Matty Ice, but I feel like we've got two Matty Ices. There's Matty Ice Ryan and Matty Ice Bryant."

Wilson's last throw, a desperation heave into the end zone, was intercepted by Falcons receiver Julio Jones.

Gonzalez, who had never won a playoff game in his 16-year career, broke down in tears after Bryant's kick went through the uprights.

"I've never cried after a win," said Gonzalez, who has stated repeatedly that he's "95 percent" sure this is his final year. "I was thinking, `Here we go again. I guess it wasn't meant to be."'

It was.

The Falcons won the first playoff game of the Ryan era, having gone one-and-done in his previous appearances to give the team - and its quarterback - a reputation for excelling in the regular season but choking in the postseason. Not anymore. Atlanta is one win away from the second Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

Ryan threw three touchdown passes and overcame two interceptions, finishing 24 of 35 for a personal-best 250 yards in the postseason. He threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Gonzalez, a 47-yarder to Roddy White and a 5-yarder to Snelling, the latter with 2:11 left in the third quarter to give the Falcons a seemingly commanding lead.

No team had ever rallied from a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter of a playoff game. Wilson nearly pulled it off, running 1 yard for a touchdown to make it 27-14, then going to Zach Miller on a 3-yard touchdown pass that closed the gap to 27-21.

Finally, taking over at his own 39 after an Atlanta punt, Wilson completed three passes for 50 yards, the last of them a short throw to Lynch that went all the way to the Falcons 3 after the quarterback spun away from rushing Atlanta linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

The Seahawks, though, will spend the offseason kicking themselves for that last Falcons' drive, and for squandering two scoring chances in the first half.

On fourth-and-1 at the Atlanta 11, Seattle passed on a field goal and a chance to give the ball to Lynch, their beast of a back. Fullback Michael Robinson took the handoff and was stuffed for a 1-yard loss by safety William Moore.

Then, with the clock winding down before halftime, Seattle used up all its timeouts and wound up regretting it when Wilson was sacked by Jonathan Babineaux at the Atlanta 20. Time ran out before the Seahawks could get off another play, sending Atlanta to the locker room with a 20-0 lead.

Bryant also connected on field goals of 37 and 39 yards in the first half.

Report: Lance Armstrong to admit to doping in Oprah Winfrey interview

Cyclist Lance Armstrong reportedly will admit to doping allegations during an interview next week with Oprah Winfrey. However, it is unlikely the seven-time Tour de France champion will provide details of use of alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs and blood doping, according to USA Today, which cites a source. The 90-minute interview at Armstrong's home in Austin, Texas, is scheduled to be tape Monday at his Austin, Texas, home. It will be televised Thursday on the Oprah Winfrey Network's "Oprah's Next Chapter" and streamed live on Oprah.com at 9 p.m. ET. It will be his first interview since he was stripped of his cycling titles after an in-depth report last fall from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency accused him of doping while leading the U.S. Postal Service cycling team. He soon after lost most of his sponsors and resigned from the board of his cancer-fighting Livestrong Foundation. "Armstrong will address the alleged doping scandal, years of accusations of cheating, and charges of lying about the use of performance-enhancing drugs throughout his storied cycling career," according to a statement from the network. Earlier this month, the New York Times reported he was considering admitting publicly that he used banned performance-enhancing drugs and blood transfusions to help him win the seven Tour de France titles. Armstrong, 41, who was stripped of his Tour titles last fall, has discussed the ramifications of an admission with associates and anti-doping officials, according to the Times, which cited people with direct knowledge of the talks. The Times said the purpose of the admission would be to talk anti-doping officials into restoring his eligibility in his athletic pursuits. Armstrong has been trying to participate in triathlon and cycling events. Armstrong's attorney, Tim Herman, earlier this week denied Armstrong would admit to the doping allegations. The Times reported Armstrong has been in discussions with the U.S. Doping Agency and its chief, Travis Tygart. Also, he would have to clear up several legal cases, including an allegation that he defrauded the U.S. government, which sponsored his U.S. Postal Service cycling team.
